CULTURAL BONDING - National Security
There are few times when independent cultures within a nation stand shoulder to shoulder; and one of those times is when communities are under threat from natural disasters - fire, floods, cyclones, epidemics - and there becomes an urgent need to defend lives no matter what their cultures or religious beliefs.
National sporting events are another example of how our cultures can, during those events, act in one accord when Australian, British, Dutch, Italian, Greek, South American-heritage players (for example) win gold for Australia.
But defending our nation against external aggression has always given us the strongest cause to show solidarity; a unified strength as we defend - under the Australian flag - what is collectively ours. And although this form of defence is not the role of Onshore Defence Force Students, it is the camaraderie that flows from that underlying meaning of defence that is vital to bonding our cultures... beginning with our youth.
The word "defence" has, throughout history, rallied the people within all nations to put their cultural and religious differences to one side in the interests of all. And so, the name "Onshore Defence Force" will aptly engender bonding as ODF Students continue to learn about career paths, cultures, religious beliefs and above all continue to march under the Australian flag.
